Sabri Ciftci

Sabri is the Michael W. Suleiman Chair and Professor of Political Science at Kansas State University, where he serves as the founding director of Middle East Studies program. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the Florida State University and an MA in Political Theory from Ankara University in Turkey.

Sabri is a scholar of comparative politics with his research primarily focusing on Islam and democracy and the Middle East Politics. His first book Islam, Justice, and Democracy (Temple 2022) focuses on the historical origins and legacies of Muslim political attitudes on justice and democracy. His co-authored volume, Beyond Piety and Politics (Indiana 2022) deals with the empirical foundations and political implications of religiosity in MENA.

Putting religion at the center, Sabri’s articles investigate the influence of religion on public opinion, foreign policy, and democratic attitudes. Currently he is working on two projects. The first one is using comparative historical methods to investigate the religious roots of state building in mediaeval Anatolia. The second project employs global public opinion surveys to explore the linkages between religiosity and image building in foreign policy.
